12/14/2006 Entry: "First bike ride" So, I took my first distance ride today. I went to a place called Spencer Butte south of Eugene. It involved about 8 miles of straight up hill and several higher altitude rollers. I started out at about 500ft and topped out at 1400ft. 900ft over about 8 miles or so with some ups and downs. (To put it into perspective, McKenzie pass, one of my favorite mountain passes, is 22 miles of uphill) This was followed by a good 5-8 mile downhill. I had to keep it around 35mph because of all the turns, but I could have easilly gone faster if I had a death wish. With the riding to get there and back I did about a 40 mile day.
