12/14/2006 Entry: "job sucks" I am nearing the advanced stages of sleep deprevation, so I will go to bed soon. My job is... interesting. I'm finally in good enough shape that I'm not dead at the end of the day. I've lost lots of fat but weigh exactly the same. That can only be good. My job mostly consists of carrying 80 lb panels above my head for a few hours followed by cutting and bending rebar, hammering in stakes with an 8 lb sledge, and pouring concrete. This involves lugging around a 4 inch diameter hose with concrete rushing through it. It can take up to 5 guys to lug this hose around. I've been told the average weight distibution is about 80 lbs per person, dragging. The other day I was holding the hose while they pumped it clean after the pour. Usually this means you just hold it as the last of the concrete comes out followed by water. Instead, the hose kinked on me which caused it to shoot out of my hands and spray concrete everywhere. I was told afterwards that I was lucky I dropped it, because it could have thrown me backwards into the forms we just poured with enough force to level them. Yesterday my boss was holding the hose and it kinked for him during the washout. He had it tight in his hands and between his legs, so he didn't drop it. It lifted him atleast 6 inches off the ground and shot him back about 4 feet. The second shot moved him back again and shot a blast of concrete and water about 50 feet into a field. It was awesome! My coworkers are a constant source of bemusment and head shaking. When I'm less tired I'll begin to relate the stories. Ooh, I applied for a micro job at the U of O that I should be a shoe-in for. We'll see in a few weeks.
