12/10/2006 Entry: "kerry pisgah"

I did a solo uni ride up Mt. Pisgah today. I didn't take any good pictures because it was rainy. The 280 degree view of the valley from the summit wouldn't have had sufficient contrast to show up well. One of the few drawbacks of riding with a cheap camera. It's about a 1k foot climb up and back down, if I remember right. The Mt. Pisgah summit hits at about 1,500 feet overlooking the Willamette Valley and Eugene/Springfield at 360ft. (it should probably be known as "Hill" Pisgah, but mountain is more fun)

The highlight of the ride was watching a hawk circle below me while riding down the clear front of the mountain. The ride up is wooded and primal and the way I take down is rocky, technical, and overlooks the entire valley for most of the way. Both up and down are super steep. Since it was muddy today I got lots of practice skid-riding. In some spots I slid one foot for every 3 feet I rode. Sometimes I was sliding for every pedal revolution. This is very difficult on a unicycle. :)

I only had one crazy, out of control fall on the way down. The first time I rode this trail I had about eight crazy falls. This one was at speed and I was glad I was wearing my arm guards that I picked up after I almost cracked my elbow off riding down the Mckenzie Trail a couple of weeks ago.

During the slow laborious climb up the mountain I wrote a letter to John Kerry in my head:

Dear John Kerry,
If you are going to botch a joke about the President, please don't do it one week before an important election you flaming douchebag. Also, please refrain from ever speaking again if you can't get it through your head that saying ambiguous things are a bad idea. Of course they are going to spin your words to mean something else. Anyone rational and informed knows that you weren't insulting the troops. However many people are not well informed, and they are only going to hear the spun version of what you said. These idiots vote, asshole. If someone has an empty gun pointed at your head DON'T HAND THEM A BOX OF AMMUNITION YOU ELECTION LOSING CRAPFACE! If your retarded vocal ambiguity costs us this election I swear to God I'm going to cut the tongues out of you, Al Gore, Howard Dean, and any other Democrat that can't learn to STOP GIVING THE OTHER SIDE AMMUNITION! It's like you guys fucking WANT to lose elections! You are the most retarded party ever and the only reason I support you is because you have the virtue of not being Republican Jesus-Freaks.

PS: Please thank the other Democrats for kicking Joe "I want to censor every possible media on the planet" Lieberman out. This was a good start at reforming your party's censorship ways. I know I don't need to remind you that it was a Democrat controlled congress that passed The Worst Censorship Law Ever that would have made the internet the most censored medium on the planet if the supreme court hadn't laughed at you. If you fuckers EVER pull any of that shit again, especially with the new conservative supreme court, I'm going to feed you your own pixelated dick. Democrats have a nasty habit of wanting to censor shit, but hopefully your kicking Lieberman out was a first step to change. Have a good rest of the day and try not to lose any elections before bed tonight.

//edit: Actually, it was a Republican controlled congress in 1996 when that censorship bill was passed, but Clinton still signed the damn thing into law and Democrats co-authored the bill.

I may be isolated in a bubble of relative sanity, but this botched joke really didn't seem like a big deal to me. The people who were outraged probably heard about it on FOX News, anyway, and had already filled out a party-line ballot. I can't imagine this changing anyone's mind, particularly with the obvious response to the outrage (as used by Kerry himself): If you're going to be angry on behalf of the troops, you should be angry at the Guard duty-shirking man who's been getting them killed for three years instead of someone who has actually been a troop in a war who made a bad joke. Sheesh.
