11/30/2009 Entry: "religion and obama" Well... The inauguration was great. Obama is apparently Jesus. I love the guy and am very excited about him, but jeeze, talk about setting someone up for failure. Did anyone notice the glaring inconsistency in the inauguration when it supposedly focused on equality on civil rights? According to the US Census the US is 51.3% Protestant, 23.9% Catholic and 16.1% "Atheist, Agnostic, and Nothing in Particular." This makes Atheist/Agnostics the third largest "religion" in the United States. Compare this to 0.6% Muslim and 1.6% Jewish. To Obama's credit, Non-Believers where mentioned in his speech, but only as an after thought (coming after the 0.4% Hindu), and sandwiched between two long, drawn out prayers. Atheists are a large silent minority. There are more Atheists than blacks (12.4%) and the same amount as homosexuals (15-18%). But guess what, you can still be fired for being Atheist. About 1 in 6 Americans are Atheist or Agnostic. How many do you know? Not that many I'd bet, because it doesn't pay to be out of the closet when you are Atheist. I certainly hide it. Do you think America would have elected an Atheist president, even though there are more Atheists than blacks? FUCK NO! What would happen if Obama had refused to swear on the bible? So why is this a problem? Why do I care? I spent a lot of time trying to figure this out today. I feel that religion is personal and none of anyone's business, so why do I care that the fact that atheists exist is ignored? I figured it out. You CANNOT tell someone that they shouldn't legislate based on religion and then tell them it's fine to have prayer in official ceremonies, in our pledge, and on our currency. When someone says to you "Gays can't get married because God doesn't like it," you can't refute that when you allow religion everywhere else in government. WE ARE GUARANTEED FREEDOM OF AND FROM RELIGION. Let government officials believe what they want, but they CANNOT force that believe on me through laws that they make, and we CANNOT enforce this when we allow them to use religion everywhere else in government. There is no such thing as a "non-denominational prayer" like we supposedly had at the inauguration, because it ignores that the third largest group doesn't want any prayer at all. I'm not saying they can't pray, but the state shouldn't be leading it. Freedom of religion means that anyone can practice what they want, but when the state endorses one, some, or ANY religion it infringes on the rights of the other religions, including those with none. We are large. We are larger than Blacks, Jews, Muslims, and Hindus. It's time we were heard. Obama, I am not an afterthought. I appreciate that you are not Rev. Bush, but you aren't Jesus either.

propecia hniqa Posted by Abberley @ 10/16/2009 03:05 AM PST When you figure that "under God" wasn't added in to the pledge until the late 50's, it's clear that our country has been getting more "officially" religious. Posted by Dreqan @ 01/21/2009 10:05 PM PST That's so interesting that there were no prayers before...I guess I think of past times as being more religious than now. Scary if that's not true! I am sorry that you felt excluded. It seems quite selfish of the prayer-leaders to have it their way, and it also seems childish when you put it that way--that people can't keep their religion out of things. I wonder what will happen when we have the first Jewish president. I personally think it would be awesome to take the oath on the law book or constitution instead of the Bible. More people (including presidents) are apt to agree with the whole of the law than the whole of the Bible anyway. It would be a lot less hypocritical. And hypocritical and prayer don't mix, in my book. (If one can help it.) Posted by Sis @ 01/21/2009 04:51 PM PST I was listening to a bit on NPR yesterday morning that mentioned that all this inaugural prayer business is a relatively recent development. There was no prayer at the Lincoln inauguration or indeed at pretty much any 19th -century inauguration. In fact, one of the Adamses swore his oath on a book of legal code instead of a Bible, reasoning that that was what he was swearing to uphold, not Biblical commandments. I find that to be a much more logical position to take. I feel very strongly that religion and state matters should be kept completely separate in the best interest of both. A major reason we were set up as a secular nation was so that government would not interfere in religious matters. It has become clear that religion interfering in government matters is just as problematic. Obviously, I have no problem with anybody, including President Obama, praying for help on their own time--I'd even encourage it if it helps him. However, I will say that Rick Warren's prayer, especially when he began speaking about Jesus specifically, made me feel angry and excluded. The inauguration should be an event for all Americans to celebrate and be a part of (of which to be a part?). Religious people can handle keeping their religion a personal matter--they do it at work every day. It should not be too much to ask that they continue to do so during state events so that all citizens can feel represented. Posted by wifey @ 01/21/2009 12:09 PM PST I think no prayer is as close to neutral as possible, since no one can truly agree on what religion's God(s) to pray to. I certainly see your point about the "slippery slope" when you start having state-sponsored religious bits. I really do think that it has less to do with the fact that people are extremely strong-willed about their (Christian) religion and more to do with the fact that people are scared. However, I think it would be cool if there was an "hour of prayer" on inauguration day when everybody went to their own places of worship to offer all different kinds of prayers for the presidency...but there was no official state-sponsored prayer. More prayers would be good, right? :-) I'd love that. It won't happen, though. Posted by Sis @ 01/21/2009 09:49 AM PST I do see how no prayer would seem like a minority taking over as well. No prayer is hardly non-demonitational either, since apparently 74% of America is religious. That being said they could pray somewhere else, publicly even, but at a separate, non-government sponsored party. We have a secular government run by religious people, and it's their duty to keep the two separate even if it goes against their beliefs. Why bother having a constitution at all if we pick and choose what to follow? I certainly don't want to take away anyone's prayer. I like religion, but if we allow a little bit of it in to government then the rest will come rushing in after it. (and has) Posted by Dreqan @ 01/21/2009 07:11 AM PST I think it gets so complicated when they are trying to decide WHO gets to say the prayers--and they mean who among Christians! Seems it would be simpler to skip it. On the other hand, I think asking for divine help makes nervous people feel better. Ignoring the fact that the divine obviously doesn't help every worthy cause...when you can't do something about something that scares you, praying helps you feel better. And I think a lot of people would find it too arrogant to swear in a president without mentioning God. Irony! I thought it was nice that he mentioned non-believers. That's got to be a first. I did really like the prayer after Obama's speech. The older guy had marched with Dr. King, who was very religious...so I thought that was culturally appropriate. However, you could argue that it shouldn't have been state-sponsored. Who's to say, after all, that the things they are asking God for really benefit every American (or world citizen)? The truth is, I thought it was nice to pray, but they were 100% Christian. A less denominational prayer would have been nice. But no prayer? Honestly, I would not have liked that. Hmmm.
