12/14/2009 Entry: "How to drive around bikes" I was asked a question today which I would like to answer publicly. It's one that I hear a lot, and is discussed often among bikers. The question goes: We have a lot of bikers in the summer here, and I know that I shouldn't pass them unless I have a clear lane to get by them. I don't want to crowd them into the curb or sideswipe them or something. But I often wonder if I am making them nervous by following them so slowly. Are they worried that I will get too close behind them? Do they want me to just get past? In the interest of not having another long winded post, the answer is after the jump. 99% of the time the cyclists I'm riding with agree when they think a car should just pass them or stay behind them. This is because the answer is common sense to a regular biker, but understandingly not so to someone who rarely rides in traffic. This also makes it hard to explain, and my "best" answer is to say "Go ride in traffic some and you'll never wonder again." I don't mind when a car goes slowly behind me in order to pass safely. I also don't mind when a car passes me without giving me a whole lane. I only "require" 3-4 feet of clearance assuming the driver is going a safe speed. I generally prefer the driver to pass me then ride behind me, not because I worry that they'll hit me - but because I, not knowing their personality, worry that they'll get impatient and eventually do something angry and dangerous. Here are a few rules of thumb: Pass slowly and give plenty of room, as soon as you can. Speed is as important as space. If I can reach out and punch your car, you are too close. DO NOT pass if you are both near the top of a hill. Cyclist are often crawling along on hills, so they are used to cars waiting and prefer that to a car hitting another car head-on near them at the crest. Sometimes bikers, who see the other side of the hill first, will even wave to you once they see that it's clear in an effort to save you time. Don't trust them, your safety is your business. They could screw up. DO NOT pass if you will be passed by an oncoming car at the same time or shortly after passing the cyclist. I've seen many near crashes because of this. Don't make an unsafe pass because you are worried that the biker is getting nervous. Maybe they are - but atleast they are safe. That being said sometimes I do get annoyed when someone doesn't just pass me when it is safe - but they are still erring on safety and I'd rather be annoyed than flat. When you do drive behind them give them lots of space. They can stop way faster than you and it shows that you aren't impatient. DO NOT honk to let them know you are there or to say "Hi." That is scary as hell. If you want to communicate that you aren't in a hurry just stay back a safe distance. If you want to say "Hi" wave out your window after passing them. This shouldn't be an issue if the biker is cycling correctly - but give them lots of room to avoid parked cars and doors opening. If passing around parked cars ASSUME that someone will open a door into them and that they'll fall towards you. Drive far enough away so that you won't run over their head. (it's happened) A quick search found me this website of how to drive around bikes that is very accurate. It's a coincidence that it's from Oregon. Of course, as said before, the best way to learn how to safely drive around bikes is to bike some. The reverse is also true - bikers who never drive don't realize how hard it is to drive around them. when they're pretty close, but I can always hear them when they're at least another 150 ft away. Drives me nuts because it says to me, "hey get out of the way" when I know rationally this isn't the case. I also prefer to just be passed and can usually tell enough in advance when someone is going to be impatient or do something stupid to slow down or get out of the way.
