12/14/2006 Entry: "training diary" Training Diary: Yesterday and today Mark, Mike and I did some hardish Muni riding. Yesterday we went out to Soper's Mill to break Mike in since he hadn't ever done Muni before. He tore it up. He does triathalons and is a better general unicycler than us so I'm not sure why we thought we'd need to break him in. The highlight was my fall trying to ride down an steep ATV hill - I ended up sliding and then poll vaulting off the seat, doing a flip in the air, and landing hard and rolling down the rest of the hill. Thank God for armor. Today we went out to Seven Oaks Ski resort and rode about 4-5 miles. Seven Oaks is THE hardest mountain bike trails I've ever been on (ignoring Moab.) It's brutal steep up and downs with no real breaks. You feel like your going to vomit almost the entire ride. You need to "hump" up most hills, which kills your back and abs and makes breathing difficult. We rode for about two hours. Mike ended up being faster than both Mark and Me. Go figure. :) Occasionaly we see a biker out there and we get the "you guys are nuts" speech because we are on Uni's. I enjoy that speech. Tomorrow I hope to run 5 miles again if I'm not too sore. I want to get down to 8 minute miles. My last run, ignoring the break, was about a 9.3 pace. That's unacceptable. There is no reason why I shouldn't be able to run that at a 7 minute pace eventually. If I can pull an 8 minute pace tomorrow, however, I'll be very surprised. I'm not a runner. For a comparison, on a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being a 100 mile bike ride in Iowa or a 70 mile ride in the mountains - (and 60 miles of headwinds in wyoming on a loaded bike being a 13, and 130 miles in nebraska being an 11) - The seven oaks unicycle ride is about a 6-7, putting it about on par with a 60 or 70 mile bike ride. The 5 mile run I'd put at about a 4 (at the pace I go.) These measurements based on pain during the activity, post ride exhaustion, and following day soreness.
