11/22/2006 Entry: "Movaphoning" I've been getting the impression that several people think that our move to Oregon is irresponsible. Well... maybe it is, but let me take a minute or two to explain myself. (I'm tired of packing) click the link for the long entry:
I lived in Cedar Falls for 18 years or so and Ames for 7. I am able to have a lot of fun in Iowa, and I love my friends here, but it's time to move on. I am irresistably drawn to a more exciting outdoors than cornfields. A weekend outdoor vacation here is, at best, a drive down to Effigy Mounds and backbone state park. Where I'm moving something like Effigy mounds is child's play. I've lived through two sets of friends now in Ames. No friends I had in college are still in Ames. 98% of my Ames friends now are either work friends or friends through juggling/unicycling club. No one in those clubs was in college at the same time as me. It's time to move on before I get started on set number three. I know that my friends and family are spread all the fuck over Iowa - but several of them are much farther away. It's time for me to have my adventure. I can't be in Iowa my entire life, and there is no better time to move than now. Yes, we don't have jobs out there yet. But, we do have a fair amount of wedding money to help with the move, and frankly our expenses aren't high. With us both working and paying rent and the bills won't be hard. Getting hired will also not be hard. We may not have real jobs at first, but I've been bouncing around from job to job since I graduated. I can get hired doing anything - if it comes down to it I can hit resteraunt after restertaunt in Eugene until one hires me. If I move quickly enough I could probably get a job in one day. (but I'm not counting on it) I know moving before we get jobs also limits our job opportunies - and that some think we should follow a job, but... Will I get a microbio job? Will I go to school for EMT? Will I try to landscape or go into foresty, ranger work? I don't fucking know. I'll get a job to pay the bills first and figure out the rest. To me a job is simply something that pays for rent and your hobbies. Nothing more. It's not my life, and it's not how I define myself. All Jobs Suck. Period. If I have to work for a damn living, I'm atleast doing it somewhere cool. Moving now also makes sense from a Qehndrah perspective. If she has to wait like I did to start a career her chances will suck (like mine.) Why start a career if we are planning on moving? Now, lets talk practicality. What if I don't find a job? What if I can't make rent? Well, Mom left me a safety net that I have a bit left of, and I'd be a fool to pretend it's not there. Life is short. I'm not going to pretend I'm poor and stuck in Iowa just for shits and giggles. I'm going to let that money embolden me and I'm going to chase my dreams knowing that it's there to bail me out if I fuck up. This doesn't mean I'm not going to try my ass off to work and make money - I want that safey net to last as long as possible so that I can use it to chase other dreams later. However, I'd be a fool to live my short life scared by pretending that it's not there. That isn't what Mom would have wanted. We don't have kids. We're not going to have kids. That means that around the second or third month of us both being employed that we'll be filling that safety net back up. Qehn does have student loans and expensive prescriptions. We know that. Our chances of success in this endeavor remain very high, regaurdless. Yes, I'm moving away from friends and family. The internet makes the world small, but not THAT small. I realize all this. Yes, 2 hours vs 30 hours is a big difference. However, no one wants to hang out with a miserable, bitter Seager, and that's what's going to happen is I don't satisfy my wander lust. You think I hate my job now? Wait 5 years. I can't let myself get stuck here. I'll be back to visit. Worst case visit me on RAGBRAI - I'll be back every year. Best case you move the fuck out to paradise yourself. Why not? I'll be only a few miles from Mt. Hood, the coast, California, Portland, Seattle, The mouth of the columbia river, Mckenzie pass, shitloads of mountains, the high dessert, etc. Huge swaths of land in Oregon are classified only as "wilderness." There are art festivals every weekend. The gardening is amazing. Qehndrah's amazing creativity is going to be nurtured and encouraged to grow so much more in that enviroment. I want to show her so much that it's killing me. Everything I've seen there appears to be built just for her. I can't wait for her to see it. The stars are amazing. Look at this chart here. The best you get in Iowa is classified blue and most is green. The majority of Oregon is light and dark black. In Ames I drive 1/2 hour or so to get from a red area to a green or blue one, and I consider that pretty good. In Eugene I'll drive 1/2 hour or so to get from a red to a black area. Holy effin' christ, the milky way will cast a shadow! The drive to other exciting places like Yellowstone and Moab will be through Idaho, Montana, and Utah, not Iowa, Nebraska, and Wyoming. Biking, holy effin christ on a unicycle, the biking will be amazing - AND YEAR ROUND! No more snow to get in the way. A bus system with bike racks. You can live entirely car free unless you need to leave town, with or without a bike. When I do want to ride distance I can go on weekend trips to the mountains - or simply drive an hour, bike up and back down a mountain, and drive back. No to mention the possiblities for North Shore unicycle riding (top three pictures). Some of the best trails in the country/world are in this area. If I can get the time off (read Qehndrah gets a real job and I keep putzing around) I can have a yearly bike ride from Oregon to Iowa for RAGBRAI. (who cares about riding east of Iowa, the west is the best biking) My dream? Qehn and I get an independant pedaling tandem, we sell 90% of our crap, and spend a couple years biking all around the continent. That'll probably never happen (cats), but a damn good second will be a yearly ride from the west coast to RAGBRAI, solo or on a tandem. (an independant pedaling tandem, btw, gets us around Qehn's heart and lung problems. She can coast or work as hard as she feels like while letting me do most of the work.) Anyway, to wrap this up, this is a good idea AND this is the BEST time to do it. I'll miss you all, but if I stay around who I am is going to die. I'm leaving you no matter what - whether it be a relocation or a self-destruction. We all have passions. Some have a passion for work, some for raising a family, others need to create. I need to explore. I need to satisfy my wander lust. I haven't felt comfortable here for years. The RoadShow USA experience fundamentally changed me. I should be able to explore for years without getting bored in Oregon - and if in 5-10 years I've burned it out (unlikely), we'll just keep going. I've seen it in Qehndrah's eyes on RAGBRAI and in Yellowstone. I hear it when she talks about honeymooning in New Zealand. She feels it too. She's going to get bit with the addiction just like I did. Just watch. :) (She wants to go backpacking with me!) You two need to get out of the Midwest and go to a more awake part of the country. We moved from Santa Barbara (S. California) to Davis (N. California) to Georgia to here -- and this was a good place for us because, then in our late 20's, we wanted to settle down. I think everybody who has been raised in Iowa should live somewhere else for a few years at least. If you ever had any doubts about this move I would strongly try to talk you into it. I'll miss you like hell but, gee whiz, it'll be so hard to convince myself to go to Oregon. It's just your guys' style, I understand that. We'll miss you, but it will be nice to see you happy. I always missed our CA family, and swore I'd leave Iowa. But then I married into a large family here and got what I'd been looking for. It's hard to see the family I did have leaving now that I have decided to stay. But you are looking for something else, and I hope you find it. We'll come and visit you in the summers.
