12/13/2009 Entry: "dead boot disk" Wondering what's up with my computer? Here is the skinny: I'm running 4 hard drives. (I do video editing, etc) Two IDE and two SATA. The two IDE were from my old computer before I bought Ryan's. One of the IDE drive partitions has an old install of Win2k which was hanging out because I never got around to deleting it. The SATA drives came with the new computer (a year ago now, maybe?), one of which ran the new OS, WinXP. That boot disk and it's partition are no longer accessible. The drive is dead. I was able to boot to the old Win2k install (which surprised the fuck out of me because I forgot it was there) and access the other SATA drive but not the boot one. At one point the non-boot partition showed up, but it gave an error when I tried to access it. Window disk management doesn't see it at all. I switched the cables on the mobo and it made no difference, so it's not the port - it's definitely that SATA drive. The WinXP recovery disk can't get past "gathering drive information" when it tries to fix it - so it sees that disk but can't do shit to it. So, The Good: I figured it out, and I can run the old (albeit unstable because it was installed on a different hardware config) Win2K install for now. The Bad: I had a lot of really important info on the disk. I need to find a way to get that info off. I think someone who's better than me could probably pull it off, but I have no idea where to go or how much it should cost. Oh, and I have to buy a new drive too. Piss-ass. Advice?

It's called Parted Magic and if you can create a separate partition that'll read the same data, you may have some luck. I managed to get out of a similar situation once by fucking with it, so I'd say give it a go. The only thing to remember is that it can take a long fucking time before it'll show all of your drives. I remember getting a quote for close to $1,000. The guy I checked for decided it wasn't worth it. Switching platters into another drive of the same make/model is a possibility, but rarely works unless done by someone who really knows their stuff because things have to be aligned just right.
