08/18/2006 Entry: "Microwaves"

I bought some oatmeal today, and while looking at the back of the box it set off one of my pet peaves. God Damn Microwaves!

Oatmeal has a fair amount of vitamins in it, however the only instructions on the back are microwave instructions. The rub being that microwaves kill vitamins, so what's the point? I know I've harped about this before, but it still annoys me. Why not just tell people to boil some water? I know that several of my friends distrust science and don't believe much that comes out of the mouths of "authority," but I assure you that I've done the experiment myself in Biochem lab. Boiling vs Microwaving, microwaves kill this shit out of vitamins. It's a standard demonstration used in teaching students how to isolate chemicals out of things like lettuce, etc.

Of course, boiling isn't that good for vitamins either, but it's surely not as bad as microwaving. I could only see a microwave's usefulness in reheating food anyway. Anything else you can spend 10 more minutes and cook it in an oven or on the stove. Currently we don't even have a microwave, so we reheat everything in the oven and it works just fine. If I had a toaster oven it would be even better. No one should have to own a microwave. What's the point in eating food if it's a simply empty calories?

Katy and I just take vitamins. I'm not into the vitamin fortified processed food thing. Not to say I don't eat processed foods- I just don't drink Nesquik because it has added calcium.

Most microwave food starts out pretty devoid of nutrients anyway.
